The UK Health Security Agency has reported a spike in excess deaths from the virus during last summer’s periods of extreme heat, in particular when theyHeatwaves are already associated with deaths from cardiovascular disease, but the link with coronavirus has not yet been fully explored.
During the whole of summer 2022, there were an estimated 2,985 excess deaths from all causes in England, concentrated during the five periods ofExtreme heat episodes occur when at least one region, or the mean central England temperature, is at least 20C. While the report does not record the exact numbers of excess Covid deaths during the periods of extreme heat, separate official figures from the Government showed there were 191 deaths on 19 July, when temperatures exceeded 40C in England, and 172 on 20 July, compared to a seven-day average of below 100 a day for the weeks either side, and around 30 to 40 a day for the rest of the year.
“Potentially this could indicate that the heat played a role in some of the Covid-19 deaths, and therefore the estimate provided here may be a slight underestimation.
