'NATO has never been more united than it is today' - US President Joe Biden delivering news conferenceA short time ago, we heard from Prime Minister Boris Johnson who said Western powers are looking to"steadily ratchet up" the volume of military material they are supplying to Ukraine.
Asked about the threat of chemical weapons, the president said the US would respond if Mr Putin used them but the"nature of the response would depend on the nature of the use". At the same time, there is much less regard about angering Russia when it comes to bolstering the number of troops, warships and jets on a higher state of readiness within the alliance's own borders – something that had previously restricted NATO’s willingness to strengthen its ability to defend against and deter Russian aggression.
This is because it would require NATO jets to shoot Russian warplanes and missiles out of the sky and destroy Russian air defence systems to defend Ukraine's air space. Another balancing act is also being carried out by NATO when it comes to spelling out how allies would respond should President Putin launch a chemical or biological weapons attack in Ukraine.
He said the UK and its allies would"ramp up lethal aid to Ukraine" as its forces resist Vladimir Putin's invasion. On the topic of a no-fly zone, which Ukraine has continually requested is implemented, Mr Johnson said there is no country that is willing to enforce one in the"way we would so like to". Asked a question about how concrete the nuclear threat is, the PM said discussions on the use of nuclear weapons was a"distraction" from what is really going on and"that is a savage attack with conventional means on innocent people".
More than 400,000 people, including 84,000 children, in Ukraine have been forcibly deported to Russia, a Ukrainian official has claimed. The council said in a statement:"Residents of the Left Bank district are beginning to be deported en masse to Russia. In total, about 15,000 Mariupol residents have been subjected to illegal deportation."As we have reported throughout the day, G7 leaders have been meeting in Brussels to discuss the war in Ukraine.
Justice Secretary Dominic Raab is in The Hague today to gather support for the International Criminal Court to prosecute Russia for war crimes. He added:"The ICC will have much stronger support to gather critical evidence at an early stage of war crimes on the ground in Ukraine. While diplomats meet in Brussels to discuss how best to help Ukraine, they must think of the voices that can't be heard.
Since the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, China has continued to maintain its neutral position.
