President Joe Biden today announced the US would give $1 billion in new security assistance to Ukraine as the country's war with Russia entered its 29th day.

He said four new battle groups had been established in Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary and this was a"strong signal" that the alliance would"collectively defend and protect every inch of NATO territory".Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman says life is returning to 'normal' in some areas in Ukraine

Speaking to the congregation of leaders via video link, Mr Zelenskyy said he needed fighter jets, tanks and better air defence and anti-ship weapons to protect his country. "This is a request for the sake of our military. After such a war against Russia, never, please, never tell us again that our army does not meet NATO standards," he added.

Mr Stoltenberg says NATO will provide more ground troops, anti-tank systems, drones, naval power and jets to the areas around Ukraine. There were also warnings for China, with NATO saying it must wield its influence to find a peaceful solution, rather than help and fund Russia.The United States says gold-related transactions involving Russian banks may be sanctioned by the authorities.

The government will also fund the BBC World Service to the tune of £4.1 million, to bolster its efforts when it comes to tackling disinformation.
