Hollywood star Sean Penn spoke highly of President Zelenskyy, saying he has significantly risen to the kind of challenging occasion that 'rarely passes by in the human experience'. Latest on the war in Ukraine:

By Mark Stone, news correspondent, in Brussels, Belgium

Given the stakes perhaps it's a surprise that President Biden has taken this long to travel across the Atlantic. More sanctions on Russia: probably on more members of the Russian Parliament - the Duma. Talk of nuclear strikes, intelligence suggestions of chemical attacks. How to respond? How to defend against the deployment of a nuclear weapon either on the Ukrainian battlefield or beyond? It's frightening stuff and some of it, in theory, represents an existential threat for us all.

"Putin should be under no illusions – we are united with our allies and will keep tightening the screw on the Russian economy to help ensure he fails in Ukraine. The UK has previously sanctioned Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, put a stop to Russian airlines and planes flying over or into the UK and has slapped restrictions on most people involved in the Russian Kremlin and Duma.

It will see Mr Stoltenberg, a former prime minister of Norway, remain as secretary general beyond September, when his term had been due to expire. The reason for the previous extensions was because he was again seen as a strong, unifying and well-respected leader during another challenging time for the alliance – when Donald Trump was president of the United States.

This time around, allies agreed that they need the NATO secretary general to remain in post as they bolster their defences in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – seen as the gravest security crisis for European since the Second World War.The US president has arrived at NATO HQ in Brussels ahead of a busy day for the commander-in-chief.Unlike his European counterparts, he opted to skip past the awaiting media this morning, so we may not hear from him until much later in the day.

We've heard a lot about things being"unprecedented" recently, but a G7, NATO and EU meeting on the same day is unheard of, and could prove pivotal in the crisis. There will be seven areas of Ukraine where humanitarian corridors will be opened up today, the country's deputy prime minister has said. "I think that President Zelenskyy has proved to be a quite remarkable leader of his people - he's rallied them and he's been their voice," he said.
