Hopes that modern fighter jets would bolster Ukraine's grinding counteroffensive appear to be fading, with an official saying there's no chance of them being used this autumn and winter.

Mr Blinken spoke to Paul Whelan - who was sentenced in 2020 to 16 years in prison for espionage charges which he denies - via phone yesterday, a source told CNN.
