'We know it's going to be a very difficult year'. Ukrainian parliament member, Yelyzaveta Yasko, says what's taking place in Ukraine now is 'unbearable', as Russia fires more air missiles and increases its attacks. KayBurley 📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602

Live reporting by Emily Mee. Updates from Neville Lazarus and Yousra Elbagir in Kyiv, and Diana Magnay in MoscowWeeks of battles around the eastern city of Bakhmut are continuing, with Russia making little - if any - progress.

"When you hear a drone, you have about five seconds to leave your position and run. The rocket will fly in that fast." Amid the forest and snowed-over swamps of Ukraine's thousand-kilometre border with Belarus is a territorial defence unit gearing for the worst. Not far from Captain Sydorchuk's hill is a village where northern Ukrainians have been living for generations, now shaken by reports of a looming invasion from the border straddling their homes. Some of them have family members living just 20 kilometres away on the other side.

A little way down the road cutting through their village is a lake that sprawls across the border. On one side, the last Ukrainian outpost. On the other, a green Belarusian watch tower. The blasts are coming from a spot a few kilometres down the road. They are part of a simulation exercise that the 100th brigade is conducting daily in preparation for a potential new front on their doorstep.

But Semyon Pegov, who was awarded the Order of Courage by Putin in late 2022, said the assertion about mobile phones was"not very convincing". In some cases, he said, Russian troops were advancing over the corpses of their own soldiers during their efforts to take the city. Bakhmut has become a key target for Russia as it is located on a strategic supply line between the neighbouring regions of Luhansk and Donetsk.
