Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said this week will be 'important' for his country as a new year looms - and the war continues | Ukraine latest 👇

Live reporting by Faith Ridler. Updates from Neville Lazarus and Yousra Elbagir in Kyiv, and Diana Magnay in MoscowOnce home to more than 70,000 civilians, the eastern town of Bakhmut now has fewer than 12,000 residents in the region.

However, a statement from the Institute for the Study of War said that capturing the town will be of"little operational benefit". He added:"Of course, this is the liberation of our land from the enemy, as well as the restoration of Ukraine, the return of our people home, the further rapprochement of our state with key partners, the opening of new opportunities for Ukraine in the world – these are all tasks for the near future. Mr Zelenskyy said he will soon present his view on the"implementation of these tasks" in his annual message to the Verkhovna Rada. This is the Ukrainian parliament.

Train stations and bridges were also hit earlier in the war, as Ukrainian civilians attempted to flee the conflict. It's Christmas week in Kyiv and the capital is still under siege. Russia claimed the annexation of the regions - Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia - on 30 September, though fighting continues.Reports had suggested those in the regions were being forced to vote, and were unable to leave the areas until the so-called referendum was complete.Parts of Kherson, including the city of Kherson and areas around the Dnipro River, were reclaimed by Ukraine in November after a Russian withdrawal.

Sergei Kiriyenko travelled to the region to discuss safety at the plant, according to Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-installed local official. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has six Soviet-designed VVER-1000 V-320 water-cooled and water-moderated reactors containing Uranium 235, which has a half-life of more than 700 million years.

Ukraine has purchased drones like the Fly Eye, a small drone used for intelligence, battlefield surveillance and reconnaissance. Ukrainian authorities have never formally acknowledged carrying out such drone strikes, but they have made allusions as to how Russia might expect retaliation for its war in Ukraine, including within Russian territory.Air raid alerts are sounding in all regions of Ukraine at the moment - a stark warning that another wave of Russian bombardment may be imminent.Local reports have suggested that the alerts may have been declared after Russian jets stationed in Belarus took off.
