Local residents are mobilizing charity efforts to help refugees and those who have stayed to fight

Thursday’s solemn and tear-filled service drew about 120 people. It was a “moleben” service, meaning a prayer that Eastern European Orthodox and Catholic church members make to Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary for intercession. “This is a full community effort,” Skop said. “Every single person here has a story. There are some good stories and some very sad stories.”

Cash donations are being collected for Ukraine war victims at Ukrainian immigrant Daria Nadar’s Oh My Cake bakery, which shares space with Pappalecco in Hillcrest.San Diego pastry chef Daria Nadar has been putting her time and talents to work over the past week to raise cash donations for a special war fund at the Bank of Ukraine.

Many customers have come into the shop at Fifth and Pennsylvania Avenues with handfuls of cash to donate to the cause, so the employees have put a large glass vase on the counter to collect the money.
