The plans to bring the site back to life have been projected to cost around £25 million.

Plans to transform a former Nottinghamshire shopping centre are "progressing well" despite Nottingham Trent University saying it will not move into the site as planned. Mansfield's Beales department store closed in 2019 after the owners went into administration and proposals have been confirmed for a £25 million project which will bring the huge site back to life.

But the latter organisation now says it currently does not intend to have a physical presence in the building. The Conservative Group at Mansfield District Council have tabled a question about the matter for the next full meeting of the authority on October 24.It reads: "We have recently learned that NTU has pulled out of the Beales development as they no longer view their involvement as a financially viable venture.

An NTU spokesperson said: "NTU is working closely with key stakeholders on the Connect development, and, to date, has provided advisory support on the project. NTU has worked successfully for a number of years with strategic partners within Mansfield and Ashfield districts to contribute to the development of the area, both through financial investment and providing a skills offer, business support and expertise from our colleagues.

In terms of the wider work on the project, Mr Bradley added: "I am concerned about the capacity to do the work and deliver on it... One of the things we asked for from Government was some additional support to make sure we can add that capacity and expertise.
