In 2022, 65% of benefit recipients were branded 'unfit for work'.
A scheme to help thousands of people get back to work rather than ending up on long-term sickness payments has been extended by the Department for Work and Pensions .
From 2026 to 27 the government is planning to scrap work assessments and will pay a new Universal Credit 'health element' to those who also receive the disability benefit Personal Independence Payment, which has its own assessment and is not based on the ability to work. Ahead of the new scheme launching, the DWP has unveiled a new 'back to work boost'.
Individuals will sit down with a practitioner to develop a 'work ability plan' over a one-hour conversation, identifying barriers to employment and any actions and support needed to overcome them. The plan is then shared with their jobcentre work coach to move them towards getting a job, the DWP said.
"This pilot is an important part of that, helping people understand what they need to do to move towards employment through a simple and effective conversation. The findings will help us build the new disability benefits system once the work capability assessment is removed later this decade."
