Universal’s Frisco gambit is striking at Disney’s weakness | Opinion
Universal Parks & Resorts Chairman & CEO Mark Woodbury announces plans to build a Universal Studios theme park in Frisco on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023.It’s no accident that Universal Studios chose North Texas to finally go giant character head to giant character head with its old enemy Walt Disney. With its planned Frisco family-themed park, Universal is creating the kind of warm-and-fuzzy experiences that were once upon a time synonymous with Disney.
Finally, Universal may have just reached the critical mass of kid-friendly intellectual-property to devote an entire park to them. “I grew up here in Southern California and [Universal Studios] wasn’t a place we went to very often as kids or even when I had my kids because there wasn’t enough to do for younger people,” Harmon said.
Universal’s hit “Harry Potter” attractions, first launched in Florida in 2007, were its first shot across Disney’s pirate-ship bow. Even Harry has a touch of darkness compared with the cartoonishly jolly color palate in the plans for the Frisco park. These plans are more reminiscent of the rainbow-bright Magic Kingdom than the functional maps of Universal Studios, Florida.
