University of Houston, Texas Tech systems to ask Legislature for their own permanent endowment

“We two are at that point where we have gone to the next milestone,” Khator said at a Thursday Board of Regents meeting. “So I think it’s time that Texas thinks about … how can we raise their research profile from $200 million to $400 million? In order to do that, we have to do things differently, for which we really need a predictable investment pool.
Mark Jones, professor in Rice University's Department of Political Science, said he doesn't believe that Texas A&M and UT-Austin would oppose the plan with the same force they showed in previous years, aside from possibly feeling a threat to their status. University systems that are potentially excluded from a new endowment, such as Texas State University and the University of North Texas, would likely push back harder.
Legislators may bite at the plan if it means improving Texas' higher education landscape compared to other states, UH officials said. Texas universities have fallen behind in ranked lists, with only the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University ranking in U.S. News & World Report's top 50 public universities in the country. California has nine.
"The only hope that UH and Tech have of reaching AAU status is by a pretty powerful infusion of funds," he said.
