Rishi Sunak has sadly failed to realise that climate change poses threats for many to come, writes paulwaugh Both he and the planet are running out of time to prove he’s up to this existential challenge
The Prime Minister is running out of time to prove he’s up to the challenge, argues Paul Waugh with unalloyed joy. Relieved to be free of a sodden summer, the headlines would shout “Phew, What A Scorcher!” Stories would be illustrated with young women in bikinis “basking” in the “baking” weather.
Baroness Brown, the independent peer who chairs the adaptation group of the statutory Climate Change Committee , was pretty withering in her response. Adaptation is about very concrete proposals to strengthen flood defences and preservation of natural carbon sinks like peatlands. It’s also about protecting key net future zero infrastructure from the risks already incurred by higher temperatures. There’s little point in having a new giga-factory for electric cars if it ends up under floodwater.
