The Jazz have a number of win-now veterans that aim to compete next season. But none of them can be dealt until Utah decides to fully tear it down and trade Donovan Mitchell. Tjonesonthenba details the decision the Jazz are facing:
. These were all starters and highly placed rotation guys on playoff teams last season. Conley, Beverley and Bogdanovic are in their mid-30s. Clarkson turned 30 in June. None of these guys has time to wait. All have to wait and see what’s going to happen with the star player on the roster. There have been cracks in recent days. Beverley spoke about the need for the Jazz to figure out what they want to prioritize. Clarkson tweeted at Mitchell a few days ago, asking if he is staying in Utah.
The Jazz must ask themselves whether there is a deadline on this and whether there is a date when a deal needs to be consummated, a point at which they just go into the season with Mitchell on the team. Remember, Utah doesn’t have to trade him. He has three years remaining on his deal. Utah can trade him at the deadline. The Jazz can trade him next summer.
But the downside of such a strategy is also clear. For almost two years, others in the NBA have been trying to poach Mitchell from the Jazz, and that’s hung like a cloud over the organization. The minute Mitchell gets dealt, the cloud lifts. If Mitchell is on the roster at the beginning of the season, the cloud lingers until the trade moratorium passes in December. And then until January. And then until the February deadline.
It would be a significant distraction for a young new coach. Mitchell has handled this like a pro, so it wouldn’t be his fault. But the dynamic would still be there. These are just a few of the issues the Jazz face as we head into August. None of this is easy from any side. But all sides have to be patient as this gets worked out.
