It is understood the crime gangs include the Kinahans, the Hutches, the Dundens but they also include other smaller groups from Coolock, Finglas, Drogheda , Cork and Limerick
There are currently 19 known criminal gangs operating behind bars in Ireland's jails, The Irish Mirror can reveal.
Inmates are, for their own safety, demanding to be housed with their specific gang when they are jailed. "The situation is subject to continuous monitoring and assessment. These figures exclude the subversive prisoners at Portlaoise Prison." "It should also be noted that more than one criminal gang may group together under the umbrella of a particular group, and in some instances some gangs may form splinter groups.
