KOTA KINABALU: Upko wants to return the RM1mil given by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for a Jalinan Kasih programme but cannot do so as their account has been frozen, says party president Datuk Seri Madius Tangau.
"We have told the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission about this matter and told them that we want to return the money but they refused to entertain us," he said.
The Sabah Deputy Chief Minister said Upko did not spend the money as the RM1mil received was not sufficient to conduct the planned Jalinan Kasih programme. "With the MACC refusing to allow us to return the money, we have no choice but to find other means to give the money back," he said.Based on previous court reports, Upko was named among the 15 recipients who received cheques amounting to RM10.77mil from two of Najib's bank accounts.
