The National Crime Agency says there's a 'sextortion epidemic' among teenagers – with criminals targeting a large number of boys aged between 14 and 18

Teachers have been issued with an urgent unprecedented alert over sextortion scams targeting children. The UK’s National Crime Agency has warned all primary and secondary schools across Britain to be aware of scams in their schools, after a shocking rise in the number of children targeted by criminal gangs.

The NCA has issued an alert to hundreds of thousands of education professionals following a considerable increase in global cases of financially motivated sexual extortion – a type of online blackmail widely known as ‘sextortion’.— National Crime Agency April 29, 2024 What is sextortion? Sextortion is when criminal gangs target children online, by tricking them into believing they are in a relationship or friendship with them.

The NCA reports that criminals are motivated by making money quickly, not sexual gratification, and have, in some cases, ‘gone from initial contact to blackmailing their victim in under an hour’.Tragic consequences The NCA has also warned that at least three children have killed themselves as a result of sextortion.

‘Their aim is to terrify children into handing over money’ The Crime Survey for England and Wales found that almost one in 10 children aged 13 to 15 received a sexual message online in the past year, with two-thirds of those involving photos.
