Ambassador Reuben Brigety said he was 'confident' that a Russian cargo ship that docked near Cape Town last December was loaded with war materials and ammunition

Russian cargo ship, Lady R, docked in Simon’s Town naval base near Cape Town last December, and US ambassador, Reuben Brigety, said he was “confident” that it was loaded with arms.

Vincent Magwenya, a spokesperson for the South African presidency, said “there was agreement that an investigation will be allowed to run its course” and it was therefore “disappointing that the US ambassador has adopted a counter-productive public posture that undermines the understanding reached on the matter and the very positive and constructive engagements between the two delegations”.

He accused Mr Ramaphosa and his government of lying to South Africa and the world “as to our country’s involvement in this devastating conflict”.
