Latest threat stems from long-standing desire to take revenge for 2020 strike ordered by former president
US intelligence agencies were tracking what they considered a potential Iranian assassination plot against former president Donald Trump in the weeks before a gunman opened fire last weekend, several officials said on Tuesday, but they added that they did not believe the threat was related to the shooting that wounded Mr Trump.
The Trump campaign was told about the threat not long before Saturday’s shooting, according to a person briefed on the situation. Ms Watson emphasised that the Iranian plot was separate from the Butler assassination attempt. “The investigation of Saturday’s attempted assassination of former president Trump is active and ongoing,” she said. “At this time, law enforcement has reported that their investigation has not identified ties between the shooter and any accomplice or co-conspirator, foreign or domestic.”
