The Biden administration is expected to announce that its top envoy for Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, will step down, sources say
The Biden administration's top envoy for Afghanistan is leaving his position, the US State Department confirmed in a Monday announcement, less than two months after the US withdrew from Afghanistan in a chaotic -- and deadly -- evacuation process.
Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad will be replaced by his deputy, Tom West, who led Afghan policy for the Biden presidential transition team and has been working closely with Khalilzad for months."As Special Representative for Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad steps down from his role, I extend my gratitude for his decades of service to the American people," Secretary of State Tony Blinken said in a statement.
