Ballyhaunis native Patrick Gallagher saved the lives of his fellow Marines in Vietnam by throwing himself on top of a live grenade, for which he was awarded the Navy Cross
An Irish-born US Marine who earned the Navy Cross during the Vietnam War will be commemorated this weekend by having a US naval ship named after him.

A military citation states: “Without hesitation, in a valiant act of self-sacrifice, Lance Corporal Gallagher threw himself upon the deadly grenade in order to absorb the explosion and save the lives of his comrades.
His name is included on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, which bears the names of almost 58,000 members of the US Armed Forces.
