This was a year billed as our last chance to prevent the worst impacts of the climate emergency, and it all began with a new president at the helm of the world’s second-biggest polluter, the US, promising to undo his predecessor’s harmful policies.

We spoke to Rachel Kyte, a British academic, who has been one of the UN’s most senior climate change officials, was an adviser to the UK government at COP26 and lives in the US, where she is dean of the Fletcher School of International Affairs in Massachusetts.
