But the defending champion found his rhythm and won the next eight games to take the second set and roar 2-0 ahead in the third. Spanish second seed Alcaraz allowed his Portuguese opponent to win just five more games in a commanding 4-6 6-0 6-3 6-2 victory.

Combustible Russian Andrey Rublev almost threw a racket into his own face as he crashed out to Daniel Merida.

Rublev, the 23rd seed, had just dropped serve in the fourth set when he sat down and angrily bounced his racket into the ground. The racket reared up and spun towards Rublev’s face, forcing the 28-year-old to duck out of the way, before sheepishly getting up and fetching it from behind his chair. American eighth seed Ben Shelton needed four sets to get past Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, while highly-rated Spanish youngster Rafael Jodar was knocked out.

The 19-year-old, who started the season ranked 165 and has soared to world number 13, was brought crashing back down to earth with a 6-2 6-1 6-1 defeat by Chinese lucky loser Yunchaokete Bu. Mariano Navone backed up his dramatic win over an ailing Novak Djokovic by knocking out former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini in four sets to set up an all-Argentinian third-round clash with Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

The two-time defending champion thrashed Russian qualifier Polina Iatcenko 6-1 6-1 in 53 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium. But for the second press conference running, Sabalenka got extremely chippy when it was suggested her pre-tournament week consisted of going to parties. The Belarussian – a regular poster on social media at the various events she attends and with the brands she works with – replied: “You guys are, like, a joke.

“Parties, fun. Like, why would you even say that? Why would you even think about that? What kind of question is that?

“Just because I posted, like, some activities with brands, and you think that I’ve been partying, not training? The question, like, what is that? ” When the reporter responded: “I’m saying that there are a lot of events and things like that. I’m not saying you go to the parties,” Sabalenka interrupted: “You literally said that.

Next question. ” The reporter replied: “For everyone who is unclear, I’m not suggesting that Aryna is having fun at these parties. ”“I’m saying that she makes a lot of appearances and there’s a lot to do and lots of events, okay? ” said the reporter.

She was then asked: “So, now that the tournament has started, do you find you’re getting quite serious and combative? ” Sabalanka replied: “Oh, yeah, I wasn’t serious before that.

Next question. Think before you say stuff. ” The world number one faces Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova on Friday looking for a 17th consecutive win at Flushing Meadows.
