The Pentagon has pulled 160 U.S. military trainers out of Ukraine, just the latest indication that the U.S. fears a Russian invasion of the independent former Soviet Bloc nation could come any day now
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said on Saturday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the “temporary repositioning” of those training personnel “out of an abundance of caution.” They are to remain in Europe, Kirby said.most of its staff would depart the country
“It appears increasingly likely this situation is heading toward active conflict,” a senior State Department official told reporters on a Saturday call,U.S. officials, including President Joe Biden, are spending the weekend engaged in direct talks with Moscow in hopes of diffusing tensions. Biden is slated to speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin later today; it would be their first one-on-one conversation since December.
