It’s easier to be like Dr. Jose Rizal these days, thanks to technology, Rizal 2nd District Rep. Fidel Nograles said on the occasion of the Philippine national hero’s 123rd death anniversary.

According to Nograles, the age of the Internet has seen to it that “being like Rizal is much more feasible than in the past,” and that the youth should seize the advantages that come with being digital natives.

The Harvard-trained lawyer-turned-congressman said the Internet’s democratizing effect has the potential to increase the base of well-informed youth. Often described as a polymath, Rizal was talented in painting, sculpting, sketching, woodcarving, poetry, and creative writing. He wrote two famous novels, Noli Me Tangere, and its sequel, El Filibusterismo.

Rizal Day is celebrated every December 30, the anniversary of Rizal’s 1896 execution at Bagumbayan or present-day Luneta Park.“Today we are seeing a wave of “woke” youth who are alert to issues and are not afraid to air their views about them. Granted, some sectors are taking offense at this seeming brashness, but I think this involvement, rather than stifled, should be encouraged,” said Nograles.
