UTSA collapses late, extending skid with overtime loss to Rice

UTSA coach Steve Henson talks to his team during Monday night’s game at the Convocation Center. As UTSA lined up for the postgame handshake, Japhet Medor and DJ Richards remained on the bench a few extra moments, slumped forward and silently staring at the court in front of them.

“The mood is what it should be: guys are devastated. This one hurts bad,” UTSA coach Steve Henson said. “Our guys believed we were going to get this one. Then we did enough things to put ourselves in position to win a ball game, and didn’t finish it. I have to help them more down the stretch.”Before Monday’s heartbreaker, all six of the Roadrunners’ league losses had been by double figures, with an average margin of 18.2 points.

Medor, who led UTSA with 30 points and five assists, drew a foul with 1.1 seconds remaining and hit one of two at the line to send the game to overtime. But the Owls scored on their first five possessions during the extra period and shot free throws the rest of the way, overpowering the Roadrunners. The Roadrunners started 8 of 14 from 3-point range but hit just 3 of 17 the rest of the way, as Henson said the Owls focused on staying home against UTSA’s perimeter shooters.

Up to the 7-minute mark of the second half, when Rice began to rally, the Owls were shooting just 38.5 percent overall and 25 percent from beyond the arc. They hit 12 of 16 attempts the rest of the way, including 3 of 4 from outside.
