UTSA focused on bouncing back as Conference USA championship game approaches

After falling behind UTEP 24-0 last week, UTSA had to pull out all the stops, including one that Donyai Taylor enjoyed, to come away with a 34-31 win that put the Roadrunners on notice entering the C-USA championship game against North Texas.Waking up Monday morning to open a week of practice for the Conference USA championship game, UTSA safety Kelechi Nwachuku pondered how similar he felt to the same week last year.

On paper, the Roadrunners are charting a different trajectory in 2022, riding a nine-game winning streak into the C-USA title game after finishing unbeaten in the league’s regular season. The Roadrunners were “whipped up front on both sides of the ball” and felt disappointed they “did not physically win the game” against UTEP, coach Jeff Traylor said.

“We treated this last game like a loss,” Harris said. “We did not play well all-around, and you can just tell that guys weren’t happy. Even though we won, the score did not display how we played.” While UTEP finished the year 3-5 in Conference USA, North Texas went 6-2, pushing UTSA to the limit in their first meeting. The Roadrunners needed a touchdown pass from Harris to De’Corian Clark in the final minute to secure a 31-27 win against the Mean Green in the Alamodome last month.

UTSA is also armed with championship experience from last season, while North Texas’ roster includes just one holdover from the Mean Green’s last appearance in the league title game in 2017.
