The Roadrunners received 14 of the 22 first-place votes from a panel of media covering the conference.
As a result, the league will ditch its usual divisional format for 2022, instead pitting the teams with the two best conference records against each other for the championship. The team with the better winning percentage in conference games will host.
FAU was slotted fourth in C-USA's preseason poll, followed by North Texas, UTEP, Charlotte, Middle Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, Rice and FIU. The Roadrunners have also been tabbed to an array of preseason watch lists as 2021 C-USA coach of the year Jeff Traylor prepares to enter his third season at the helm.
