Uvalde CISD has suspended all police activities and placed police staff on leave in the wake of what it called 'recent developments.' The district has called for additional Texas DPS troops to provide security.
Following days of protests by parents and what Uvalde CISD in a news release called “recent developments [that] have uncovered additional concerns with department operations,” the Texas school district has taken the drastic measure of suspending all police activities and placing its police department staff on leave for the time being.
It was on May 24 when a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School claimed the lives of 19 teachers and two students. The law enforcement response that day has been heavily criticized, even called an “abject failure.” It took law enforcement 77 minutes to make entry into the classroom where the gunman was holed up.
“As a result of the recent developments, Lt. Miguel Hernandez and Ken Mueller have been placed on administrative leave, and the District has made the decision to suspend all activities of the Uvalde CISD Police Department for a period of time. Officers currently employed will fill other roles in the district. Ken Mueller has elected to retire,” Uvalde CISD wrote in a news release Friday..
The district in its release said it has asked Texas DPS to provide additional troops to secure campuses and extracurricular activities in the meantime. This is a developing story. Stay with Spectrum News for updates.
