'I am leading the party into the next election and hoping to form government afterwards'

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has insisted that he will not call an early election and that he will continue to lead Fine Gael.

Another proposed motion suggested that Young Fine Gaek should “call for the party leader to resign after the next election if Fine Gael does not win 10 additional seats.”A spokesman for the Taoiseach said that these motions were not debated. “[Fine Gael had] a very good local elections last time and the plan is to hold on to our 250 seats, which is going to be tough, but I think it's possible and we're going to work with our councillors to do exactly that.

“27pc for Fianna Fáil. Everyone was predicting that they would win the general election and they actually lost seats.” The next general election is due to be held in Spring 2025. However, there have been a number of suggestions that Mr Varadkar could call an election in November 2024.A number of senior Fine Gael TDs, including key Varadkar allies John Paul Phelan and Brendan Griffin, have confirmed they are not contesting the next election.
