Bronny James was going to have wild expectations and scrutiny placed on him no matter what career he chose, writes joevardon. He just happened to choose basketball. Let Bronny carve his own path. Don't measure him against his famous father:
on an athletic scholarship to play basketball.
James was a two-sport star in high school, playing not only basketball, but football too. “I needed a way out when I was a kid, I tried to do whatever it took to get out,” he said in 2014. “My kids don’t need a way out — they’re all right,” he said, pointing to financial security he’d already earned for them, if they never worked a day in their life.
In that regard, he’s still the same as when he was the boy I saw handling the family luggage at baggage claim. The James family was selective in their shielding their children from the popularity that awaited them. But when the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, a global icon, a four-time champion and MVP, says, over and over again, that maybe his last major goal as a professional is to play in the leaguehis son, it makes Bronny’s teenage experience unique and unparalleled to anyone who otherwise may have grown up sort of like he did.
Bronny is about to do something LeBron never did — play college basketball. In 2003, 18-year olds could go straight from high-school graduation to the NBA. Bronny, and all others like him, have to go to college for at least one year. He enters USC as a highly ranked prospect — certainly in the top 30 — according to every major recruiting service, but he isn’t even the best recruit headed there. Isaiah Collier is also going to be a Trojan, and he’s the top-ranked senior in the country.
