Experienced fly-half James O'Connor has signed a one-year deal with the Western Force, returning to the Perth-based Super Rugby franchise where he made his debut in 2008. The 36-year-old, who has 68 Wallabies caps, aims to use the move as a platform to push for selection in Australia's squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup on home soil.
Veteran fly-half James O'Connor has announced his return to Super Rugby's Western Force, signing a one-year contract with the Perth-based franchise where his professional career began more than two decades ago.
The 36-year-old made his Super Rugby debut for the Force as a 17-year-old in 2008 before embarking on a globe-trotting career that took him to clubs in France, New Zealand, and most recently England's Leicester Tigers. O'Connor has accumulated 68 caps for the Wallabies over the course of his international career and has represented several Super Rugby franchises throughout his time in the sport, including the Queensland Reds, Melbourne Rebels, and the Canterbury Crusaders in New Zealand.
Speaking about the move, O'Connor described it as a full-circle moment in his life and expressed his enthusiasm about rejoining the club that launched his career. He believes there is still a lot of good football left in him and wants to make the most of what could be his final year as a professional player.
The veteran playmaker stated that his body feels primed and his mind is ready for the challenges that lie ahead in the upcoming Super Rugby season. O'Connor has made it clear that he still harbours ambitions of representing the Wallabies once again, with his sights firmly set on being part of the Australian squad for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, which will be held on home soil in October and November next year.
He described the current period as an incredible time in Australian rugby, given the proximity of the World Cup, and views his return to the Force as an opportunity to compete against the best players in Australia on a weekly basis. O'Connor believes that playing week in and week out in Super Rugby will give him the chance to demonstrate his abilities and stake a claim for national selection.
The experienced campaigner is eager to bring his vast knowledge and international experience to the Force squad, having played in numerous countries and been exposed to a wide variety of coaching programmes, playing structures, and rugby philosophies throughout his two-decade career. The signing represents a significant boost for the Western Force as they prepare for the new Super Rugby season and the broader build-up to Australia's hosting of the World Cup.
O'Connor's return to the franchise where he first made his name is expected to provide leadership and mentorship to the younger players in the squad, as well as adding a proven performer to their backline. Having played in some of the most demanding rugby environments around the world, including top-flight competitions in England, France, and New Zealand, O'Connor brings a wealth of experience that the Force will be hoping to harness as they aim to compete at the highest level.
His decision to come back to Perth signals both his commitment to finishing his career strongly and his desire to contribute to Australian rugby during a pivotal period leading into the showpiece event on home soil
