The mountain lion was spotted early Saturday morning prowling around the pool before it swam across a nearby lake.
A recent video of a mountain lion prowling around a California family’s backyard swimming pool before paddling across a nearby lake might seem like a rare occurrence — but Zara McDonald, a wildlife biologist with the Bay Area Puma Project, says it’s actually “not all that unusual.”
Strowski, who had never seen a mountain lion near her home before, called the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. She told the Mercury News that police arrived on the scene when the animal was already in the water — it was about 300 yards from the shoreline and had nearly reached the other side of the lake.
Mission Viejo Animal Services is currently working with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and researchers in the area to identify the animal, which has not been seen since, Michelle Claud-Clemente, director of animal services for Mission Viejo, told SFGATE. “If you think about it from this perspective, mountain lions have the largest range of any terrestrial mammal in our hemisphere. It really shouldn’t be surprising that they can swim, which they can do really well.” said McDonald. “They’ll take fish. They’ll take seals, sea lion pups, otters… Lots of different sea animals. They’re highly adaptable.”
