After losing senior center Dylan Hoyt, Viewpoint basketball has had to ‘reinvent itself’ this season.

Support our high school sports coverage by becoming a digital subscriber. The Viewpoint boys basketball team started the season 7-2. But on Dec. 16, things changed.

“We had to completely reinvent ourselves,” Viewpoint coach JJ Prince said. “Stuff we’d been working on since June, we had to change almost everything. We’re talking at least 15 post entries a game, ghost screens for 3-pointers, him gone left a huge absence in our offense.” It’s the program’s second regional final appearance in six seasons. The Patriots fell to Harvard-Westlake in the Division IV final in 2016. Viewpoint has never been to a CIF State final.

“He’s improved tremendously when it comes to his scoring output and balancing when to get his teammates involved,” Prince said. “He’s a super intelligent player, but the fundamental issue with great scorers is they always want to score. He’s elevated our team in a different way since Dylan went down.”
