Villanova rides experienced core back to Final Four, beating Houston
The Villanova Wildcats celebrate their victory after the NCAA South Regional men’s basketball final at AT&T Center, Saturday, March 26, 2022, in San Antonio, Texas. The Wildcats defeated the Houston Cougars 50-44 in the Elite 8 to advance to the Final Four in New Orleans.One of the few glimpses of emotion from Villanova arrived as the game’s final seconds ticked off, when fifth-year senior guard Collin Gillespie threw the ball off the backboard and raised four fingers in the air.
“Those guys came before us, and they taught us how to play Villanova basketball and what it means to wear a Villanova jersey,” Gillespie said. “So it definitely did come full circle. Now we're just trying to maintain that and pass it down to our younger guys and keep playing for the guys who came before us.”
The Wildcats showed the poise of a team that had been in tense moments before, finding an answer every time the Cougars tried to narrow the gap. Samuels, voted the Most Outstanding Player of the South Regional, scored a game-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting with 10 rebounds.
