Vintage Times-Union: In 1979, Jacksonville Beach decided its beach driving days were over

The Jacksonville Beach City Council was unanimous when it came to the ban, saying it would improve safety and cut down on boozing and litter. The dangers were very real — and in some cases still are.

In 2000 two 16-year-old girls were run over while sunbathing at Anastasia State Recreation Area in St. Johns County, leading to a ban on driving there. One of the victims died after a decade in rehab facilities and nursing homes. Beach driving, by the way, is not completely done with in Duval County. Part of the beach at Huguenot Park, east of Fort George Island on the north side of the St. Johns River, is still open for driving, something strongly cherished by many in that area.
