Visitor ban imposed at Cork's Mercy University Hospital over spike in flu-like cases there
Visitor restrictions are also in place at other hospitals including Cork University Hospital, the Mater Hospital in Dublin and University Hospital Waterford.
More than 40 people have been admitted to MUH, which is the second largest hospital in Cork, with flu and 75% of the people presenting to the emergency department with symptoms consistent with flu are testing positive for the condition. As a result, a ban on visitors - apart from exceptional circumstances - came into effect at 8.30pm last night and will remain in place until further notice.50% of people awaiting admission from hospital EDs have the flu "The risk is to patients from visitors, because of the virulence of flu in the community," a spokesman for Mercy University Hospital said.
Meanwhile, management at University Hospital Waterford and also at Cork University Hospital have appealed to people to only attend the emergency department if absolutely necessary.A visitor ban imposed at Wexford General Hospital over Christmas has been relaxed in recent days, but management asked that relatives only should visit patients and that only one relative is with a patient at any time, apart from in exceptional cases.
