Voters in hard-fought House races are more likely to vote for Republicans than Democrats next month, according to a new poll.

Among likely voters in competitive congressional districts, 48% said they would support the Republican candidate and 43% said they would support the Democrat, theNationwide, Democrats enjoy the advantage on the so-called “generic ballot,” with 50% of likely voters saying they’ll support the party’s candidate, compared to 47% backing the Republican.

Republicans need to pick up a net of just five seats on Election Day to take control of the lower chamber.Nationally, 52% of Republicans said they were “extremely motivated” to vote compared to 46% of Democrats. In competitive districts, 55% of Republicans were “extremely motivated” compared to 45% of Democrats. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report

The poll also found that the recession and rising prices remain top issues for voters, with 59% saying the economy is extremely important to their vote and 56% saying the same about inflation. In competitive congressional districts, those concerns were magnified, with 67% and 64% saying the economy and inflation were, respectively, their top issues.
