The Chicago Cubs' opening-day roster gained some clarity with left-hander Wade Miley's and shortstop Andrelton Simmons' injuries.
However, it came at the expense of injuries. Left-hander Wade Miley is shut down for 10 days with left elbow soreness after an MRI showed inflammation. There is no timetable for his return, though manager David Ross said he is not concerned about Miley — for now.
The Cubs have made clear throughout camp they do not want to rush players to prepare for the season and an arbitrary date in opening day. Miley initially experienced left elbow discomfort when his arms went over his head during his delivery and then it got a little worse, feeling it on his release. Miley had faced live hitters only once this spring in one inning of live batting practice Sunday. At that point Miley already felt something, and it kept bugging him after the live BP.
The immediate ripple effect of Miley’s absence: the importance of right-handers Alec Mills and Keegan Thompson. The Cubs won’t need a fifth starter until April 16th at Coors Field, the ninth game of the season. Mills or Thompson, depending on how the Cubs want to utilize matchups, could start against the Colorado Rockies.
Cubs shortstop Andrelton Simmons runs the bases during a spring training workout on March 16, 2022, at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz.
