Putin digs in on contracts for mercenary groups - after Wagner Group refuses to sign
Yesterday Chechen fighters signed the contract with the defence ministry. Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, said the Akhmat paramilitary group, which has often been called his private army, was among those to sign.Apty Alaudinov, Akhmat’s commander, said the unit had “prepared and sent tens of thousands of volunteers” to Ukraine in the past 15 months. “I think this is a very good thing,” he added in a quote on the defence ministry’s website.
Mr Prigozhin claimed his group was now receiving 2.5 times more recruits after the recent “provocative announcements about the need to terminate the existence of Wagner private military company”, because volunteers wanted to avoid signing the contracts. It follows a series of increasingly mutinous outbursts by the mercenary boss over recent months, includingLast month, he posted an expletive-ridden video on social media hurling insults at Mr Shoigu and Valery Gerasimov, chief of the general staff, calling them animals and accusing them of incompetence.
The US-based think-tank, the Institute for the Study of War , said Mr Shoigu and the Russian military command might be regaining favour with Mr Putin “after Russian forces successfully conducted some defensive operations in southern Ukraine to pursue the formalisation of Russian irregular forces that they likely originally planned in winter 2023”.
It added that Wagner’s success in Bakhmut in the east over winter and spring, and the Russian MoD’s lack of decisive victories, might have forced the postponement of any desired formalisation of Russian forces.
