Wales announces two key changes to their starting lineup for the Six Nations match against Italy following a disappointing loss to France. Veteran forward Taulupe Faletau returns after injury, while Scarlets center Eddie James earns his first cap. Wales aims to break its 13-game losing streak.
Wales has announced two crucial changes to their starting lineup for their upcoming Six Nations clash against Italy . This comes after a demoralizing 43-0 defeat to France in their opening match of the tournament. The most notable change sees Taulupe Faletau, a veteran of 104 caps for Wales and four for the British & Irish Lions, return to the team. Faletau's last Test appearance was in 2023 during the Rugby World Cup, where he suffered a broken arm against Georgia.
He later sustained a shoulder injury upon returning for Cardiff six months later. Filling the starting spot vacated by Aaron Wainwright, who sustained a facial injury against France but has since recovered and been named as a replacement, Faletau brings much-needed experience and leadership to the Welsh side. Another change sees Scarlets center Eddie James earn his first ever start, replacing Owen Watkins, who is out for the remainder of the season due to a suspected knee ligament tear. Wales finds itself on a 13-game losing streak, and a continuation beyond this weekend would significantly threaten head coach Warren Gatland's position. It could also see the team drop to 12th in the world rankings, behind Georgia.Gatland acknowledged the importance of this week's training and emphasized the need for accuracy and discipline against Italy. He highlighted Italy's physical strengths and commended the team's preparation for the challenge. Meanwhile, Italy has also made two adjustments to its squad, with Niccolò Cannone starting in the second row and Jacopo Trulla taking a place on the bench, replacing the injured winger Simone Gesi.
