Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, is ending cigarette sales in some of its 4,700 U.S. stores after years of debate among the company’s leadership, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Cigarettes will be removed from some stores in Arkansas, California, Florida, and New Mexico, people familiar with the decision told the newspaper. In some places, the change has already happened, and Walmart has added more self-checkout registers or product shelves in place of theThe decision comes amid internal debate at Walmart as the retailer aims to grow into the health services market, the newspaper reported.
Most of the country’s $95 billion in cigarette sales in 2021 happened at gas stations and convenience stores, the newspaper reported, with Walmart and other retailers representing about 14% of cigarette sales. Walmart isn’t the first national retail chain to stop tobacco-related sales, though it is the largest, according. Target stopped selling cigarettes in 1996, and CVS Health stopped in 2014.
When CVS stopped selling tobacco products, the company predicted that profits would drop, the AP reported. Sales in areas outside of the pharmacy fell for a few quarters, but overall revenue has grown after several acquisitions bolstered the company’s health care offerings.
