Thanks to a new Illinois law, election commissions in Chicago and Cook County, along with collar counties, will also allow people to join a permanent vote-by-mail roster rather than having to request ballots in advance of each contest.

Election season is officially upon us as applications are now open for voters to request mail-in ballots for the upcoming June 28 primary.

This year’s primary promises to be more competitive than usual, with incumbents nowhere to be found in several congressional races, either due to redistricting or retirements, including the decision by U.S. Rep. Redistricting has also set up a couple of unusual races in which two incumbents from the same party are squaring off against each other in the primary. Other statewide offices on the ballot include governor, secretary of state and the U.S. Senate seat held by Tammy Duckworth, who has no Democratic challenger.
