Setting off fireworks and causing dogs to become distressed could land you with a huge fine and even time in prison.

Bonfire Night is just days away with many making plans to head out and enjoy a firework display or even planning to set up their own firework show.

Coming into force in 2021, a law in Scotland makes it illegal to set off fireworks outside the hours of 6pm and 11pm, with the limits extended to 6pm-midnight on November 4. The regulations of fireworks act says: "Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, powers exist for secondary legislation and codes of practice to be made to promote the welfare of animals. Under section 4 of the Act, it is an offence to cause any unnecessary suffering to any captive or domestic animal. The offence carries a fine of up to £20,000 and/or a prison term of up to six months. The Act is enforced by local councils, animal health officers and the police.

Research for charity Guide Dogs revealed fireworks were the biggest cause of dog anxiety at 42 per cent of coming in ahead of sudden noises at 33 per cent. Around a fifth of dog owners in the UK also stated Guy Fawkes night has a detrimental impact on their pets' mental health.
