New legislation signed by the government in Catalonia, Spain means that holidaymakers are facing double tourist tax rates. The Catalonia region is home to some tourist hotspots and now it in certain areas, tourists could be charged as much as €15 a night, the Independent has reported.
Barcelona is expected to see the biggest increase, with tourists facing a maximum of €15 per night, while the rest of Catalonia will only be permitted to increase the levy if they introduce a surcharge that previously only applied in the Catalan capital.Barcelona currently charges guests in four-star hotels €5.70 per night, while those staying in five-star hotels are required to pay €7.50.“A person who comes to Catalonia paying €400 or €500 for a night in a hotel can pay €7 more,” he told Spanish radio network Cadena Ser. “We have a record number of tourists, and the new figures we are talking about for the tax do not impose any limits” .”“This is the trend at the European level." It comes as Irish holidaymakers flying to Spain this week should take note of brutal weather conditions sweeping parts of the country. Thousands of us jet off to popular Spanish hotspots for some much needed sun each year, but those travelling this week may need to re-think what clothes they will pack. A number of weather warnings have been issued by Spain's national forecaster AEMET, with tourists advised to stay updated on local weather forecasts. An unusual weather system has resulted in torrential rain, strong winds and floods in some regions. The bad conditions are expected to continue over the coming days. AEMET has issued a special notice warning of "very strong and persistent showers" hitting the Mediterranean areas, Andalusia and the Canary Islands - where it has been reported that rainfall accumulations could exceed 100mm in just 12 hours. The bad weather affects areas in Spain such as Costa del Sol, Valencia, Alicante, Tarragona, Murcia and Almeria as well as the Canary Islands.
