Watch a GR Corolla beat a Civic Type R in a drag race.
First, the Corolla has the advantage of all-wheel drive. It's also the lightened Morizo Edition, which ditches the rear seats and a few other things to trim the curb weight. It also comes with shorter gearing, always a boon for acceleration. And there's a torque bump, too. Morizo cars put out 295 lb-ft of torque, up from 273 lb-ft in the standard car. That still can't match the Honda's 310 lb-ft of twist, but it narrows the gap substantially.
It's enough to put the Corolla over the top. Despite the Honda's advantages at the top end, the all-wheel-drive Morizo leaps off the line, pulling hard and running through its shorter gear ratios. The power advantage allows the Honda to start closing before the race is over, but it's not enough to pass the Corolla.
From a roll, however, the situation is reversed. The Corolla can't quite keep up with the Honda. GR Corolla owners will have to wait for the next stoplight to catch their friends in CTRs.
