WATCH: Vice President KamalaHarris says people are going to 'demand justice' if Trump found guilty
As Trump faces several investigations that could result in criminal charges, his status as a former president and potential 2024 candidate has raised questions as to what kind of punishments should be levied against him. However, in an exclusive interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Harris shot down the suggestion that it would be “too divisive” to prosecute Trump.
“I think that our country is a country that has gone through different periods of time where the unthinkable has happened and where there has been a call for justice and justice has been served,” Harris told Chuck Todd in an interview that is set to air on Sunday.“And I think that’s potentially going to always be the case in our country that people are going to demand justice and they rightly do.
Most notably, the former president is at the center of an investigation into whether he violated the Espionage Act by taking several classified documents from the White House after he left office. That investigation came to light after the FBI conducted a raid on his Mar-A-Lago home in July and the agency recovered hundreds of sensitive documents — some marked with the highest level of classification.
Trump also faces investigations into his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, with federal prosecutors examining how these efforts may have led to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Georgia prosecutors have also opened an investigation into how the former president may have interfered with the election within the state after Trump called Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and told him “to find” the votes needed to secure a victory.
