As IWD was being celebrated around the world today, JimmyBeattieRTE visited newlandshomegar to ask 'who are the most important women in your lives?'
The day has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911.
According to the official International Women's Day website, during the International Conference of Working Women in 1910, Clara Zetkin of Germany's Social Democratic Party proposed that a day be set aside every year across the world to celebrate women and reinforce their demands. The proposal was ultimately accepted and put into practice, starting in Germany and Europe and spreading across the globe over the years.
IWD is an official holiday in many countries including Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China , Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Madagascar , Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal , Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia.
The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends and colleagues with flowers and small gifts. "IWD is very popular in Eastern European countries and it has got bigger here with more Eastern European people coming to live in Ireland," said Managing Director Micheal Devitt. "The campaign theme provides a unified direction to guide and galvanize continuous collective action, with #BalanceforBetter activity reinforced and amplified all year," proclaims www.
