A Waukegan man who stabbed and kicked a woman who had rebuffed his sexual advances was sentenced Tuesday to 16 years in prison.
The woman wrote that she is often forced to live in shelters because she in unable to work. She and Philip are both part of a community of immigrants from India; her fellow émigrés have shunned her, she said, even though she was the victim of the attack.“The thing that struck me is how little empathy he has toward the victim in this case,” Strickland said.
The defendant told the judge that he didn’t remember attacking the woman. At trial, Philip said the woman started the altercation, an assertion that Strickland termed “ludicrous.” Philip faced up to 30 years, but the judge sentenced him in the middle of the range. Strickland said Philip had no prior criminal record, and said Philip suffered domestic abuse from his father.
Philip must serve 85% of the sentence, and he will get credit for the three years and nine months he has been in jail since his arrest.
