Fans pack Torero Stadium for initial game-action glimpse of new San Diego club
San Diego Wave FC won’t truly be “home” until it gets to help break in Snapdragon Stadium in September.
The Wave created several quality scoring chances, enjoyed a healthy amount of possession and received some excellent play from goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.“Obviously, I am bitterly disappointed we didn’t get the win,” Wave coach Casey Stoney said. “We came here to win and given how we played, I thought we at least deserved to come out of it with a point but it didn’t go our way.”
The Wave did create several scoring chances, including a blast off the foot of Taylor Kornieck that sailed just over the crossbar, and an Alex Morgan close-range shot snuffed out by Portland goalkeeper Abby Smith. Morgan’s night ended when she came off in the 68th minute having managed four shots on goal and generally looking like the dangerous player she has always been.
Morgan, now 32 and a mother, saw her stardom explode during the last World Cup when she scored a tournament-high six goals and had three assists en route to winning her second championship.
